The 2009 premiere season of Boulder Children’s Chorale included performances with the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, Mahlerfest, and with the adult ensembles of the Boulder Chorale.

During the 2010-2011 season, the BCC will expand to three ensembles: two Preparatory Choirs for younger singers and Bel Canto for more experienced singers.

Auditions for the 2010-2011 season will take place June 5 & 6 and August 7 & 8. See Audition Information for details.

The Boulder Children’s Chorale is one of the ensembles of the Boulder Chorale, a 501 (C )(3) organization. As such, it is a secular, non-political entity. The Boulder Chorale has in place policies supporting equal employment opportunity, and against harassment and discrimination.

PREPARATORY CHOIR 1 (grades 1-3)

Students in this choir will learn the fundamentals of choral singing including breath, body alignment, vowel purity, blend and phrasing. Additionally, basic music reading will be taught.

PREPARATORY CHOIR 2 (grades 3-5)

Students in this choir will continue to build the fundamentals of choral singing including breath, body alignment, vowel purity, blend and phrasing. Teaching techniques will be geared toward older students. Music literacy skills will be emphasized.

BEL CANTO (grades 4-8)

Students in this choir will expand upon their knowledge of singing through the rehearsal and performance of challenging choral literature.

AUDITIONS

No preparation is necessary. Friendly voice placements will be held at the following times and location:

June 5, 2010 from 10:00 am-2:00 pm
June 6, 2010 from 2:00-5:00 pm
August 7, 2010 from 10:00 am-2:00 pm
August 8, 2010 from 2:00-5:00 pm

If you miss audition dates and are interested in participating, please call 303.554.7692 about the possibility of scheduling an audition.

No preparation is necessary.

Auditions will consist of:

1. Vocalizing (to test range)

2. Aural recall (echoing pitches)

3. Sight singing & rhythm reading (skills are not necessary for acceptance into the group)

4. Singing a familiar song like "Happy Birthday"

Boulder Children's Chorale is a choir for treble voices. Boys whose voices have changed are ineligible.

TUITION (includes music)

$200 per year for Preparatory Choir 1 and 2, payable in two installments in September and January

DIRECTORS

Kimberly Watkins
Boulder Children's Chorale Artistic Director & Bel Canto Choir Director

Kim Watkins completed dual master’s degrees in music education and vocal performance at the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2004. Her professional experience includes thirteen years of secondary choral teaching in North Carolina and Colorado public school systems. In 2003, Mrs. Watkins advanced as a finalist in voice competitions sponsored by the Denver Lyric Opera Guild and the National Association of Teachers of Singing. During her graduate studies at the University of Colorado, she appeared as Madame Lidoine in Dialogues of the Carmelites, and as Gianetta in L’Elisir d’Amore. She also served as conductor of the University Women’s Choir and as an instructor for various music education courses. Mrs. Watkins has been a soloist with the Arvada Chorale, Boulder Chorale and the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra. She has served as an adjudicator for voice competitions at CU Boulder and in the Saint Vrain Valley School District. Mrs. Watkins is currently Director of Choirs at Niwot High School. She resides in Longmont with her husband, Jason and her son, Daniel.

Shauna Keene
Boulder Children's Preparatory Choir Director

A native of Santa Barbara, Shauna Keene is a Regional Winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, a first Place Junior Division Winner of the West Palm Beach Opera Competition, as well as the recipient of awards from Dante Alighieri Society, NATS, and Denver Lyric Opera Guild. Shauna was a fellowship artist at Music Academy of the West for two consecutive seasons, and has appeared as guest artist with Colorado Springs Philharmonic, Opera Fort Collins, Central City Opera, Colorado Symphony Orchestra, and many others. Some of her operatic roles include Constance in Dialogues of the Carmelites, Queen of the Night in Magic Flute, Despina in Cosí fan tutte and Zerlina in Don Giovanni.

Shauna earned a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Colorado (Boulder), a post-Bachelor Teachers License from Colorado State University, and will complete a Masters of Music in Music Education from Colorado State University in 2009. She is a Kodály certified music teacher and a member of the Organization of American Kodály Educators.
