The Boulder Chorale and you – our members, audience, and donors – are a community within the larger Boulder community. Our Boulder community has been devastatingly and senselessly harmed by the King Soopers shootings in a way that is incomprehensible to all of us. The loss of so many lives by gun violence is a local and national tragedy.
As musicians, we stand with you in the only way we know how, which is through the transcendence of music. We offer you this beautiful oratorio by Antonín Dvořák, Stabat Mater, which we performed with the Boulder Symphony in May of 2019, in hopes that it will provide comfort. Dvořák lost several children, and in his grief, he turned to this Christian Latin liturgical text about Mary watching over her son Jesus while he dies at the cross. The final words are:
“While my body here decays,
may my soul Thy goodness praise,
safe in paradise with Thee.”
May we all find grace and healing, and may our community be stronger than ever.
